Belarus is a country situated in Eastern Europe, with more than 50% of the population as Christian followers. The state has nine official public holidays that must be honored by every employer. These holidays are grouped into different categories which are, state holidays, religious holidays and local holidays. Employees are entitled to a day off on a public holiday with pay just like any other day. Those who choose to work on a public holiday are paid a special rate for the day; they are also allowed to pick another day for their off to replace that of the holiday. The government of Belarus issued a decree which completes a draft for the annual release of non-working holidays in Belarus on 29th November in 2017. On a public holiday, the government does not perform any official duty.

In Belarus, some public holidays are not official and are not granted the national holiday status by the law. In most cases, these are holidays established by the president under his powers as the head of state. Likewise, he also has the rights to take away a public holiday.

Belarus holidays are unique in all aspects. For instance, while other global countries celebrate Christmas on 25th of December, Belarusians commemorate it as Orthodox Christmas on 7th January. During public holidays in Belarus, government offices, schools, and banks close down. Some retail stores, however, open business but only for half a day. For the stores that are in operation, they often offer discounts and offers to their customers as a way to celebrate the holidays.
