Ethiopia is a nation with a current total of 13 national holidays. The vast majority of holidays in the nation are of religious derivation. Many of such days are on different days in a year, as they depend on the lunar cycle of different calendars. The commemoration of holy days is typically for an extended number of days.

In Ethiopia, celebrations typically take place over several days and are colorful, mostly religious, and celebrated frequently. Notable Christian holidays include Meskel, Christmas, Timkat, KiddusYohannes, and Easter. KiddusYohannes, New Year's Day, is observed on September 11; to coincide with the end of the heavy rains season of and the start of spring. Muslim holidays are memorialized based on the lunar calendar and fall at different times each year.

All the national holidays of the land are regulated under Proclamation 29 issue in 1996. The proclamation supersedes all previous decrees made under the various regimes that have governed Ethiopia in recent history. The declaration established the current 13 holidays and removed the ones that were observed in the former rule.

The Laborcodes of Ethiopia give staffs entitlement to a day off on national days. That applies to all payment schemes, including the ones paid on a monthly basis. Section 4, Chapter 3 of the Labor Laws of the Republic of Ethiopia, provides that anyone that is required to work on a national holiday due to the nature of their occupation must receive payment at twice their actual rate for all hours worked.
