Russia is known for its vibrant holidays full of celebrations and festivities. The holidays are bound to Russia’s culture, different religions, social stands, and democracy. As a religious country, most of the holidays are observed by churches such as the Orthodox Church. As the church’s calendar alters with time, the holiday gets to shift to different days each year.

The country has 27 public holidays where 12 holidays are recognized as the paid holidays by the government. Each city in the country has a special date on which it celebrates its founding date. Most of these holidays are marked with fireworks as Russians take to the streets, speeches by local politicians and concerts.

The nation has Muslim holidays and Christian holidays in the country but are not given recognition though they are celebrated separately by the respective faiths.

According to the Russian law, all holidays that fall on Sunday or Saturday are pushed to a different day of the following week. All the holidays that occur on Tuesday or Thursday have a prolonged holiday. This is because Friday and Monday are taken as a day off when the official holiday falls on Thursday and Tuesday respectively. However, employees are often required to work six days before or after the said holiday to accommodate the work days used.

Government services, schools, banks, and retail shops close down during these holidays.
