Slovakia, with a total population of about 5.5 million people recognizes a total of fourteen public holidays established mainly on traditions and Slovak history. The public holidays follow the basic European or international practice and observance. During the public holidays, as is tradition elsewhere, most offices, organizations and all schools remain closed or operate for limited hours. Essential services remain operational though on a limited schedule too.

Most of the national holidays are founded on the predominant Christian faith in Slovakia. The dates when the Christian holidays are celebrated may vary due to the lunar cycle and are thus subject to alteration. It is thus of importance to check when they are scheduled to be marked. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs provides a guideline on the observance of the days.

During public holidays, employees don't have to go to work unless on mutual agreement with their employers. The days are enshrined in the constitution and systemized by the Labor Code of Slovakia and employers must observe them regardless of whichever dates they fall on. The nation's president has absolute powers to declare holidays if desired. Despite this provision, it has never happened since the right was accorded to the presidency.

Unlike the practice in most countries, public holidays in Slovakia are strictly observed on their calendar date. As such, no provision warrants the moving of an affected holiday to a weekday if it falls on a Saturday or Sunday and therefore, the Slovaks lose that holiday. Students enjoy more holidays as scheduled in their academic calendar.
