Return Day dates back to 1791 when the Delaware legislature required all voters in Sussex county to travel to Georgetown to cast their votes and return two days later to hear the results. Although modern forms of communication have eliminated the need for people to travel to Georgetown, the festival is even marked today by Delaware residents.

Things to do on Return Day
Despite the technology advances today, Return Day has not yet lost its significance in Delaware. The day is marked with lots of activities across the state.
On Return Day, crowds gather in Georgetown to celebrate the day with plenty of festivities. The most popular festivity is the winners and losers parade. A group of actors take the role of winners and losers of a political election and act out the scenes as it would happen back then. The chairs start by reading out the election results at the Town Crier. Then the winners go round the town pulled by horse carriages while the losers perform the ‘bury the hatchet’ ceremony. Indeed, this is a fun parade that you don’t want to miss.
Other festivities on Return Day include music concerts and skill contests. A traditional free ox roast festival is also held. The festival includes food vendors, arts and crafts, as well as other fun activities for children.
You may also opt to remain at home on Return Day and spend the time bonding with family and friends. You can use the chance to indulge in traditional Delaware foods such as steamed crabs, fried chicken, French fries, slippery dumplings, and peaches.
